Abstract

A fuel comprises a major proportion of hydrocarbons boiling in the range of 350-850 DEG F., and a mixture of at least 0.3 mg. atoms of metal per kg. of fuel of an oil-soluble calcium mahogany sulphonate and an oil-soluble lead petroleum naphthenate, wherein the mole ratio of the sulphonate to the naphthenate is 1:70 to 1:1. The sulphonate and naphthenate may be the neutral or basic salts. The molecular weight of the sulphonic acids may be 300-800 and that of the naphthenic acids more than 225. The hydrocarbon fuel may be derived from petroleum oil, shale oil or from hydrocarbons obtained from the Fischer-Tropsch process; straight run or cracked distillates may be used. The fuel may be one containing more than 0.5 per cent of sulphur. A concentrate of the mixture of the two additives in a hydrocarbon solvent, which may contain Diesel fuel or mixtures thereof with lower boiling hydrocarbons, may be prepared for addition to the base fuel.
