Abstract
N-substituted ethyl b -aminobutyrates are obtained by reacting ethyl acetoacetate with an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic primary amine of more than 6 carbon atoms and hydrogenating the product; the esters may be hydrolysed to the free acids or salts thereof. Both steps are preferably carried out in an inert solvent such as decahydronaphthalene. The hydrogenation may be effected under pressure with a nickel catalyst. Examples show the production of the following N-substituted ethyl b -aminobutyrates and hydrolysis to the sodium salts of the corresponding acids: N-dodecyl, N-alkyl (from coconut oil), N-hexadecyl, N-(4-ethylcyclohexyl) and N-(4-dodecyl-phenyl). The hydrochloride of N - (4 - ethyl - cyclohexyl) - b - aminobutyric acid is also mentioned. Other suitable amines are heptylamine, octylamine, decylamine, octadecylamine (including branchedchain amines), 4-methyl-cyclohexylamine, 2-methyl - 4 - isooctyl - cyclohexylamine, toluidines, xylidines, ethylaniline, hexylaniline, decylaniline, phenethylamine, 1 - phenyl - 3 - aminobutane and 3:3-diphenyl-propylamine.ALSO:It is stated that water-soluble salts of b -aminobutyric acid substituted on the nitrogen atom by an aliphatic, cyclo-aliphatic, aromatic or araliphatic radical of more than 6 carbon atoms are useful as coating agents and flushing adjuvants for pigments.
