Abstract

Class 20(4) [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXIX] A concrete container, e.g. silo, bunker, tank, hopper, chimney or pipe, is made by providing a reinforcement assembly of the required shape, tensioning the assembly by the internal pressure exerted through a lining by a liquid, gas, or granular material, and embedding the reinforcement in concrete applied exteriorly. The reinforcement may consist of vertical rods 1 to which circular rods 2 are welded, and it is lined at 3 with a flexible material, e.g. woven material, metal sheet or expanded metal, which lining is filled, e.g., with granular material. The horizontal pressure of the material on the reinforcement tensions the latter, and the tension is maintained until the concrete 4 applied, e.g. with a cement gun, has set, afterwhich the granular material is removed. If woven material or wire mesh is used for the lining, it may remain in place, an interior layer 5 of concrete being applied over it. If the loading is to be effected by a liquid, e.g., oil or water, the lining is of impervious material, e.g. tarpaulin. If a pipe is being made, the reinforcement is tensed by a removable bag supplied with compressed air or liquid, e.g., water from a main. The use of pervious linings with a granular filling produces compression in the vertical members of the reinforcement assembly. To avoid this, a rigid lining consisting of boards 6, or corrugated sheets 7, and, if desired, an impermeable lining in addition, may be used. In this case, the pressure on the reinforcement may be increased by using members 6 or 7 of enhanced height. The pressure on the reinforcement may be applied by vertical concrete members 10, arranged side by side on a concrete base 8, the joints between the members 10 being sealed by adhesive strips. The reinforcement 13 may consist of a steel rope wound helically or in separate rings around the members 10. The applied concrete 15 effects a seal with the base 8 by filling the space inside a ring 16, and reinforcements 9 in the base project at 12 into the applied concrete to key it to the base. The inside of the tank may be treated or lined in any desired manner. In a modification, the tank has a raised circular step outside the applied concrete, the space between the step and the concrete being subsequently caulked to prevent leakage.
