Abstract
Zinc is produced by reacting zinc sulphide with zinc oxide, the reactants being in a state of molten flux, at at least 1500 DEG C. and under a pressure not substantially less than atmospheric. Preferably the mixture is ground to a fineness of at least 4900/cm2 mesh and compressed into tablets &c. and charged into a furnace preheated to at least 1500 DEG . the charging rate being such as not to reduce the temperature below 1400 DEG C. A flux of e.g. alumina and aluminium sulphide or a molten mixture of the raw materials themselves, may be initially in the furnace. The temperature is then raised to 1500-1600 DEG C., and then metallic zinc recovered by suddenly cooling with the admission of large volumes of cold inert gases, e.g. hydrogen, nitrogen, methane. After separating the zinc and SO2 the cooled residual gas may be reemployed as coolant.
