Abstract
775,649. Shearing; forging; soldering; welding by pressure. SVENSKA AKTIEBOLAGET GASACCUMULATOR. Jan. 5, 1955 [June 16, 1954], No. 311/55. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXXVI] A connecting element, adapted to be attached to a metallic surface 3 by partial fusing in an electric arc of a pin 6 inserted into an aperture 9, comprises a stranded conductor 1 having at, at least, one end a tubular contact shoe 2 and is characterized in that the aperture 9 is provided with a conical portion 10 formed by depressing a portion of the wall of the shoe 2 and the adjacent portion of the conductor 1 whereby, when the pin 6 is withdrawn from the surface 3 to form the arc, arcing to the upper edge of the aperture is discouraged so that the surface 3 is heated over a wider and deeper zone 11. The pin 6 is held in an arc-welding or soldering gun and is of steel, copper or brass with a part 7 which is of fusible metal such as silver solder, copper solder or welding bronze and may incorporate a flux. The element may be an electrical rail bond. An apparatus for producing the element comprises a lower die 12, a part 13 engageable with the shoe under spring pressure, a punch 14 for forming the aperture, and a semi-circular punch 17 for trimming the end of the shoe.
