Abstract
A catalytic fume incinerating assembly comprises parallel metallic screens 5, 6, <PICT:0775549/III/1> <PICT:0775549/III/2> <PICT:0775549/III/3> <PICT:0775549/III/4> <PICT:0775549/III/5> Fig. 2, and a filling of metallic wire 7 composed of a core of a nickel-chromium or nickel-chromium-iron alloy with a coating of amorphous platinum, palladium, osmium, rhodium, iridium, or mixtures thereof. The wire filling may be arranged in regular bends, as shown, or irregularly. The noble metal may be deposited on the base metal by the process described in Specification 775,550. The assembly is used for the treatment of air streams containing volatile combustible materials, e.g. exhausts from ovens used for drying and baking of enamels, varnishes, &c., for the elimination of air pollution or for the utilisation of the heat of combustion. Fig. 5 shows a drying oven of the recirculating type. Material to be dried is carried on belt B and passes through oven O which is divided above perforated partition 24 into compartments 22, 23. Air heated by burner 16 is circulated by fan 17 through the compartments to chamber 21, where it passes through the catalytic assembly P, some air being recirculated by fan 20 and the remainder being exhausted at 221. Heat of combustion is returned to the drying process with the recirculating air. A burner 15 is provided to heat the circulating air, when necessary. As shown in Fig. 6, oven exhaust flows through pipes 31, 32, 34, 36 and outlet 37 to chamber 47 where it is heated by burner 38 and passes through catalytic assembly P. The air is then directed by partitions 39, 41 to flow over the inlet pipes in order to preheat the incoming gas. In the apparatus of Fig. 8, enamelled wire W is passed through drying oven 51, air being circulated by fan 63 through outlet 52, chamber 59, where it is heated by burner 57, and catalytic assembly P; part of the air is recirculated through the oven. Fig. 9 shows a cylindrical catalytic screen 73 mounted in an exhaust stack 79 and provided with a cover 81. Heat may be supplied by burner 71 controlled according to the temperature at 76, or by passing an electric current through the screen itself.
