Abstract

775,442. Television. PALLEMAERTS, J. E. H. Dec. 7, 1953 [Sept. 5, 1952], No. 14201/52. Class 40 (3). A television camera tube and a picture reproducing tube are mounted end-to-end in a cylindrical container the portion containing one tube being rotatable coaxially with respect to the portion containing the other tube. As shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 1 (contd.) the camera tube supported by socket 28 and base 26 is mounted inside a first portion 24 of the cylindrical container and the picture tube supported by socket 44 secured to a cylindrical core 36 is carried by a second portion 45 of the cylindrical container rotatably attached to portion 24 by means of a ball-race 38. The camera tube end of the container is closed by means of an optical system comprising an apochromatic lens 11 (the focusing of which is controlled by means of a cable 12 passing through the optical system support 1 by a rubber grommet 13) a concave mirror 6 and an adjustable convex mirror 20 and the picture reproducing tube end is closed by means of a glass or plastic window 51 and a mark 53 which provides a rectangular viewing frame. The whole assembly is positioned in an outer casing (shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2) and supported by means of inflatable tubes 29, 30 attached to flanges 23, 25, thus providing a water-tight enclosure in sections (A, B, C, Fig. 2) of which the various circuit components concerned with the operation of the tubes may be supported. Electrical connection between the inside of the container 24 and the circuit components is effected by means of sockets 59 co-operating with plugs 58 and between the components in the various sections by means of connections 60, 61. The apparatus is intended to be employed for viewing objects where direct visual observation is impossible, e.g. wrecks submerged at great depths and lying at various angles, and in this case, by rotation of the picture tube end of the assembly, the image may be viewed in an upright position. Radiations outside the visible region of the spectrum may be employed to form the image on the camera tube and for this purpose the lens 11 is made apochromatic for suitable lines in the visible, ultra-violet and infra-red regions of the spectrum. Specification 775,441, [Group XXI], is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
