Abstract

775,321. Fluid-pressure brakes. GIRLING, Ltd. March 2, 1956 [March 2, 1955], No. 6128/55. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XXIX] A control valve for pneumatic servo devices of the kind described in Specification 694,582, i.e. modified in that a primary valve member 43 urged upwardly by a spring 47 is provided between the valve lips 38 of the valve cage and the housing 14, the member 43 having a lip 44 which is gapped or notched as at 45 in Figure 5. When a brake application is initiated by upward movement of rod 36 and cage 35, due to spring 47 being stronger than spring 41, the lip 44 maintains the valve washer 39 out of contact with lips 38 on the cage and thus a certain amount of atmospheric air from inside the cage may pass through the notches 45 to reduce the degree of vacuum passed from chamber 30 through passage 32 to the servo cylinder, thus producing a smoother brake actuation. If movement of rod 36 is continued upwards until the top of valve head 40 strikes the cover 34, valve member 44 is forced down so that lips 38 and 44 are level and inlet of atmospheric air is completely shut off. If spring 47 is made weaker than spring 41, the washer 39 is not raised from lips 38 until the vacuum has taken effect on the underside of diaphragm 33 and the inner end of the cage.
