Abstract
Cyanoethylated cotton textile materials are reacted in liquid phase with a water-soluble amine of the formula ARN(X)Y, wherein R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, X is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical, which may be substituted, but only by hydroxyl, mercapto or amino groups, Y is the same as X or OH, and A is hydrogen or a radical containing an atom of oxygen, sulphur or amino nitrogen, said atom being attached directly to R and having its remaining valency or valencies satisfied by hydrogen or hydrocarbon radicals; the product is then washed to remove unreacted amine. The starting material may be only partially cyanoethylated and may contain, for example, 0.1 to 2.5 cyanoethyl groups per anhydroglucose unit of the cellulose molecule. It may be prepared as described in Specification 732,779. Amines which may be used include the alkyl primary, secondary or tertiary amines, 3-substituted propyl amines and polyalkylene polyamines, e.g. methyl-, ethyl-, dimethyl-, trimethyl-, triethyl-, and triethanol-amine, ethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, 3-isopropoxypropylamine, 3-methoxypropylamine and 3-isopropylaminopropylamine. The cyanoethylated cotton is preferably immersed in the liquid amine during the reaction, the excess of amine remaining in the product after treatment being neutralised with a dilute acid and the material then being washed with water and dried. In examples, cyanoethylated cotton yarns containing 1.6 per cent of nitrogen are impregnated at normal atmospheric temperature and pressure with trimethylamine, ethylene-diamine and diethylenetriamine respectively for periods ranging from 5 minutes to 12 hours. In a second series of examples cyanoethylated cotton yarns containing 1.6 per cent of nitrogen are treated in a relaxed condition for 10 minutes with aqueous solutions of diethylene triamine ranging in concentration from 3.5 to 70 per cent. In a third series of examples cyanoethylated cotton yarns are treated for 10 minutes with 3 - isopropoxy - propylamine, 3 - methoxypropylamine, 3,31 - iminobispropylamine, 3 - dimethylaminopropylamine and 3 - isopropylaminopropylamine. Specifications 767,810 and 767,811, [both in Group IV (c)], also are referred to.
