1394284 Thiosulphates; Bunte salts HOECHST AG 29 March 1972 [29 March 1971 (2)] 14803/72 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C3 and D1] Novel compounds have the formula in which X represents a hydrogen atom or a fluorine atom, a is an integer from 4 to 14, V is a bivalent, aliphatic or aliphatic-aromatic radical which contains at least one, but not more than a methylene groups and which does not contain in the terminal position relative to the thiosulphato group an ethylene group activated by a sulphonyl or carbonyl group and M is a monovalent cation (e.g. Na<SP>+</SP>, K<SP>+</SP>). The thiosulphates are, for example, obtained by reacting a compound of formula in which V<SP>1</SP> is a bivalent radical which contains, in any order, one or several units corresponding to the symbols -A-, -O-, -Z- and -NR 1 -, in which A is an alkylene group, a hydroxyalkylene group or an optionally substituted phenylene group, Z is a carbonyl or sulphonyl group, R 1 is a hydrogen atom or a C 1-4 alkyl group and T is a halogen atom, an isocyanate or an epoxydyl group or, when V<SP>1</SP> is -CO-, T can also be an alkoxy group, with a compound of formula in which V<SP>2</SP> is an alkali metal, a hydroxyalkylene group or an aminoalkylene group of formula n being an integer from 1 to 12 and R 2 being a C 1-4 alkyl group. An acylation reaction is generally effected at 15-40‹ C. and an alkylation generally at 40-70‹ C. Thiosulphates in which X is fluorine and V is -CH 2 CH 2 -O-CO-NH-CH 2 CH 2 -, or are particularly preferred but the description prepares and otherwise specifies many individual thiosulphates of the invention. The present thiosulphates are used as emulsifiers or dispersing agents to prepare aqueous emulsions or dispersions of polymeric fluorinecontaining acrylic acid derivatives, which are themselves used for rendering porous material oleophobic.
