Abstract

<PICT:0774900/III/1> Apparatus for applying coatings to workpieces fed by a conveyer of the apparatus through the coating stage has supporting means for the workpieces comprising a plurality of sets of workpiece carriers, each set being readily detachable as a unit from the conveyer at the completion of the coating operation and also being loaded with one or more workpiece or workpieces when separated from the conveyer, the conveyer and the said sets being provided with opposed connector parts by which the sets preloaded with workpieces can be brought into relatively fixed relationship with the conveyer and each set including at least one upstanding support and including a driven part positioned to engage a device to rotate the support. An endless chain conveyer 8 has bolted thereto a plurality of saddles 17. The articles to be coated are mounted on mushroom heads 14 fitted in sockets 15, having flanges 18, rotatably mounted in groups on a series of bases 16. The bases have cross angle members 21 spaced to fit over the ends of the saddles 17 and so attach the articles to the conveyer. The chain conveyer may be guided by rollers 12 and 13. For loading, the bases supporting the articles are lowered on to the saddles by placing them on a descending ramp comprising an inverted channel member on either side of the conveyer and provided with a groove into which the bases are placed. For unloading, an ascending ramp is positioned to lift the bases from the saddles. At the spraying stage, the articles are rotated by discs 3 driven by a motor 5. The discs are mounted on pivoted lever 6 and are urged to contact the flanges by springs 7. The discs may be combined with valve control means for the spraying device whereby the articles are sprayed as they are rotated. The filter 11 screens the spraying device from "flash off" and stoving stages. Specification 669,060 [Group XVII] is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
