A taximeter is provided with an initial distance or waiting-time setting device comprising an oscillatory member 21 for driving the fare indicating means, a rotary member 80 which holds the member 21 out of action until a projection 20 thereon falls into a slot 81 in the rotary member, a ratchet wheel 83 which rotates the rotary member 80 and which is actuated at the same rate as the oscillatory member 21, and means for adjusting the initial rotary position of the rotary member. The oscillatory member 21 is driven according to time or distance by a snail cam 24 which engages a projection 25 on the member 21 and the member 21 in turn actuates the driving mechanism of the taximeter by a pawl and ratchet 22, 23. The ratchet wheel 83 is driven at the same rate by a pin 94 on a lever 95 mounted on the shaft 18 of the cam 24. The ratchet wheel has a stop pin 89 which engages with a pin 90 of a setting disc 86. The setting disc is manually adjusted to give the required initial period and is held in adjusted position by a pawl 87. On commencement of a hire, the member 21 is held out of engagement by the curved periphery of the rotary member 80, the ratchet 83 is rotated by the lever 95 from its adjusted position and thereby rotates the member 80 until at the end of the adjusted initial period the pin 20 falls into the slot 81 when the oscillatory member 21 commences its normal drive. At this stage a gap 93 in the teeth of the ratchet 83 prevents further rotation of the ratchet and member 80. Fine setting of the device between the values permitted by the slotted disc 86 may be obtained by adjusting the position of the lever 95 on the shaft 18.
