Abstract
Monovinyl ethers of dihydric alcohols are prepared by a process comprising reacting acetylene with a dihydric alcohol at a temperature above 120 DEG C. in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, continuously removing the monovinyl ether of the dihydric alcohol as it is formed and cooling the ether. A suitable catalyst is, for example, potassium hydroxide. Suitable dihydric alcohols are, for example, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, propylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, tetramethylene glycol, 1,3-butylene glycol, hexanediol, decanediol and alkyl- or amyl-substituted glycols. In the examples: (a) ethylene glycol is reacted with acetylene in the presence of potassium hydroxide to give ethylene glycol monovinyl ether with a small amount of 2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane; (b) propylene glycol is reacted similarly to give propylene glycol monovinyl ether and a small amount of 2,4-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane; and (c) trimethylene glycol yields trimethylene glycol monovinyl ether with some 2-methyl-1,3-dioxane.
