Class 145 A machine for trueing and smoothing wooden poles 1 or posts comprises a rotary cutter 6 of conical or double shape on a frame 8 which is pivotable about bearings 10 by an eccentric device 11 and hand wheel 12 to bring the cutter down on the pole to trim out irregular or bent portions; the cutter may be traversable along the length of the pole or the pole may be mounted on one or more carriages 2 running on rails 4 and the pole may be held on one of the carriages and rotated by a claw device 5 operable by a hand wheel 13. In order that the wood removed may be divided into small chips, the cutting edges of the cutter may have spaced notches along their length or consist of short knives distributed over the working surface.
