In a bucket-wheel excavator a rotatable disc 6 is so mounted on a bucket wheelsupporting structure 7, 9 as to extend within, or within and through, a cavity bounded by the buckets - supporting structure 1, 16a, 5 of the bucket wheel to receive material discharged from the buckets 2 and to convey the material out to the side of the bucket wheel where it is discharged into a conveyer 21 alongside the bucket wheel-supporting structure. Rotation of the disc 6 in either direction may be caused either by a gearing drive from the bucket wheel shaft 5 or by a drive independent of the bucket wheel drive. The immediate support 7 of the disc may, when freed from the rest 9 of the bucket wheel-supporting structure to which it is normally secured, be rotated on and about the shaft 5 to a limited extent. The support 7 carries shoots 18, 19 for directing and/or retaining material on the disc and closure plates for shutting off the buckets from the cavity except where the buckets are in a discharging position. The material-receiving surface of the disc may be plain, conical or of other suitable profile and may be provided with radially extending grooves or slots. The axle of the disc projects upwards beyond said surface to support a scraper 20 by which material is directed from the surface into the conveyer 21.
