Abstract

<PICT:0772910/IV(b)/1> In a process for the thermal chlorination of methane and for partially chlorinated methanes, a preheated mixture of methane and/or partially chlorinated methane is introduced into spaces of small cross-sections between walls, one of which is heated to start the reaction and the other cooled to substantially lower temperature. The reaction chamber may be the annular space between two tubes centrally heated, and surrounded by an external cooling jacket, or groups of such concentric tubes. In the drawing, for the production of methylene chloride, the preheated mixture of chlorine and methane or methyl chloride is introduced at 11 into the annular space between stainless steel tubes 5 for the passage of the heating fluid, and external tubes 9 concentric with these; air passed through to cool the outer surface of 9 passes from 3 to 4; the outer casing is resilient (2) to allow of changes of pressure; a maximum ratio of chlorine to hydrocarbon is 0.5. The mixture is pre-heated to about 200 DEG C. and the hot wall is kept at 400-600 DEG C., and the cold wall below 150 DEG C. Methylene chloride is a product.
