Abstract

772,764. Valve gear. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Dec. 29, 1954 [Jan. 14, 1954; June 25, 1954], No. 37566/54. Class 7 (6). In an hydraulic tappet having a compression space 3 between a cylinder 1 and piston 2 and a compensating space 4, 10, filled with the hydraulic fluid, a member 5 transmitting the movements of the piston 2 to the engine valve gear is resiliently connected in fluid tight manner to the cylinder 1 and a compressible means 12 is provided in the space 10 in the piston 2 to maintain the pressure in the compensating space 10 approximately constant despite variations in the volume thereof during operation. The piston and cylinder are urged apart by a spring 9 and the member 5, which is shaped to receive the end of a valve stem or rocker and has a flange 8 resting on the piston 2, is bonded to a resilient ring 6 of rubber or synthetic resin which is bonded to a plug 7 screwed into the end of the cylinder 1, the ring 6 permitting the member 5 to move with the piston 2 relatively to the cylinder 1. The flow of fluid from the compensating space to the compression space 3 is controlled by a non-return valve 14 held in position by a cage 15 and on each up-stroke of the tappet a small amount of fluid is forced from space 3 past the piston 2 to the annular compensating space 4 which is connected to the space 10 through orifices 11 in the piston 2. The means 12, which expands or contracts according to variations in the volume of fluid in the spaces 4, 10, may consist of a cylindrical bellows containing compressed gas or of a block of sponge rubber or similar synthetic resin material covered with a layer of fluidtight rubber or synthetic resin. In a modification, Fig. 2, the piston and cylinder 1, 2, are urged apart by the resilient member 6, the spring 9 of Fig. 1 being omitted and the member 5 is screwed into the piston 2. Grooves 10<SP>1</SP>, 10<SP>2</SP>, facilitate flow of the liquid from the chamber 4 to the chamber 10.
