Abstract

772,512. Typewriters &c. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 3, 1954 [Dec. 7, 1953], No. 35039/54. Class 100(4) In a wire printer such as described in Specification 763,407, where the wires are carried by a reciprocable, print head towards and away from the platen for printing, the print head is moved by drive wires slidable in curved tubes which are straightened to reciprocate the head. 'Tubes 15 surrounding print wires 16 are confined so as to prevent longitudinal movement in a print head 10 slidable in a frame 12. The wires are set by a control rod 38 in a housing 19 as described in Specification 763,407. Drive wires 22 are secured in openings 94, Fig. 4, in the print head 10, while flexible tubes 28 surrounding them are secured in grooves 92 in a part 88 of the frame 12. The other ends of the wires 22 and tubes 28 are attached to slides 24, 30, Fig. 1, respectively, in guides 96 and are reciprocated therein by cam followers 26, 32 controlled by a double lobed cam 34. The printer operates cyclically and, with the print wires 16 set in a previous cycle, the tube cam follower 32 drops off the cam high 18 degrees before the follower 26, thus causing the tube 28 to be straightened so that the wires 22 project from the print head end cause it to advance and effect printing. When the wire follower 26 leaves the cam high, it withdraws the wires 22 in the tube thus quickly overcoming their straightening effect and stopping the forward movement of the print head 10, and finally, as both followers restore, withdrawing it to its initial position. When a double lobed cam is used during this restoration, the relative movement occurs between the drive wire tubes which could be used to effect resetting of the print wires. This relative movement can be prevented if two separate cams are used. The continued forward movement of the head 10 after printing aids the normal rebound to restore the set print wires 16 before the head is returned to its normal position thus allowing extra time for the re-setting of the wires for the next operation. The drive means may be used with banks of printers or to effect embossing, punching or stencil cutting.
