Abstract

772,186. Making metal-fabric; angular bending. BAKER, Ltd., G., and DARBY, A. Nov. 18, 1955 [Aug. 20, 1954], No. 24255/54. Class 83 (4). A machine for attaching the wires 25 of a mesh or network of relatively fine wires to a stout wire, rod or strip 24 forming part of a frame carrying the mesh or network, comprises power-operated means 18 for temporarily clamping a frame wire 24 with the mesh wires 25 below it against a base 20 and against a vertical stop-plate 13 which is slotted, at 14, for the passage of the mesh wires 24 and is of substantially the same thickness as the mesh wires, a vertically movable member 26 adapted to engage the mesh wires 24 from below and bend them upwardly into a vertical position against the rear surface of the frame wire 24, and a bending member 32 adapted to be moved horizontally to engage the upwardlybent ends of the mesh wires and bend them forwardly over the frame member 24 and then to be moved downwardly to close the ends of the mesh wires tightly round the frame wire. The mesh is laid on a table 12 with the ends of the wires 25 projecting through slots 14 in the stop-plate 13. A slide 17 is then lowered by lever means operated by a cam on a shaft controlled by a pedal-operated clutch 22. A shear blade 16 on the slide 17 co-operates with an insert 15 in the table 12 to shear simultaneously the ends of two wires 25 to the correct length, while a clamp 18 on the slide 17 holds the frame wire 24 and mesh wires 25 against the base 20 inset in the table 12. A pair of the members 26 is then moved up by a cam-operated lever 28 and two of the bending members 32 are then moved forwardly by another cam and then swung downwardly about their axis to close the ends of two wires 25 on the frame wire 24. The benders then return to their normal position and the slide 17 rises. The mesh is moved transversely to bring two more mesh wires to the bending station and two more to the shearing station. More than two wires may be bent simultaneously. Specification 510,465 is referred to.
