Hooks. - Fish hooks are made automatically by feeding a continuous wire from a drum into the rearmost of a series of blank holders in a feed member, cutting-off a blank and reciprocating the feed member so as to feed the blanks step by step to successive working points, the final operation consisting of bending the wire into hook shape, which at the same time removes the blank from the feed member. The blank C, which is cut at 1 from a continuous length, is fed successively along the surface B of the bed A to working points 2, 3, 4, at each of which is provided an automatically-operated clamp and tools at one or both sides for operating on the blank. The feeding is effected by a notched member D on a slide F, which is reciprocated longitudinally at the side of the bed by a cam K. The blanks are clamped in the member by jaws O carried by a rod P, which is operated by a cam V and arm U or slide through an adjustable piece W carried by a lever T pivoted on the member D and connected bv a link R to the rod P. The feed member may be carried by a vertical slide G so that at opposite ends of its stroke it may be raised or lowered respectively by the cam K or by a second cam so as to be brought into or removed from the path of the blanks, or the jaws O may be arranged to be raised and lowered for this purpose. The jaws O are closed just prior to release of the clamps which hold the blanks during operation of the working tools and are released just after the clamps have secured the blanks. The final operation consists of bending the blank to hook form over a former, Fig. 2, which also clamps the point of the blank, by a pin, at the same time removing the blank from the feed member.
