Abstract

771,956. Hoses; junction pieces. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Nov. 28, 1955 [Feb. 25. 1955]. No. 33987/55. Classes 99(1) and 99(2) In a method of making. a hose 10, Fig. 1, for a pinch valve having rubber sealing rings 19, 20 at each end thereof, a tube 11 provided with a braided reinforcement 12, e.g. of cotton, nylon or rayon, and mounted on a mandrel has an outer jacket 13 applied thereover and sealing rings are substituted for annuli 49, Fig. 6, removed from the tube- The hose is cured to form an integral structure. The tube 11 and jacket 13 may be of natural or synthetic rubber, and any desired number of layers of braid orjackets may be applied either successively or alternately to form the hose. As shown in Fig. 1, the hose incorporates a portion 14 of an internal diameter equal to that of the bore of pipes 21, 22 connected by the hose. Initially, the tube 11 is extruded and assembled on a mandrel having a diameter equal to that of the internaldiameters of the portion 14 and pipes 21, 22, and one or more layers 12 of braid are applied to the tube, the strands of the braid making an angle of 30 to 45 degrees with the axis of the tube In the second stage of making the hose, the tube is expanded by air pressure and passed over anothermandrel 24 built-up from sections 25, 31 -having reduced stem portions 27. Upon release of the air pressure, the tube contracts at the portions 27 of the mandrel to form the portions 14. The jacket is expanded by air pressure passed over the tube and allowed to contract by release of the air pressure, whereafter the mandrel is mounted in a lathe and rotated to enable the annuli 49 to be removed and the resulting channels to be filled with ribbons of uncured rubber to form rings. After helically wrapping the hose with tape, curing the hose, and removing the tape, the mandrel is again mounted in the lathe and the rings are centrally cut through to produce the sealing rings 19, 20. As shown in Fig. 6, several hoses are simultaneously made.
