[Also in Group XV] The air-stream issuing from the sounding aperture of a whistle 2 sets in vibration a spring 52, producing a warbling effect. A slidable weight, which may be magnetized, or a slidable collar 40 controls the rate of vibration of the spring, and the collar 40 may be latched in its extreme position in which it lifts the end 53 of the spring clear of the whistle, allowing the production of a steady note. The pitch of the whistle is adjustable by means of a piston 58 which may be latched by the end 62 of the spring 52. In a modification, Figs. 16 and 17 (not shown), holes in the whistle pipe are opened and closed by one or more vibrating springs. The whistle may carry a toy bird, of which a part or the whole may be arranged to move with the vibrating spring, Figs. 7-10 and 12-15 (not shown). Alternatively, the whistle may form the barrel, Fig. 18 (not shown), or the handle, Fig. 19, of a toy pistol, in which pulling the trigger moves the spring into operative position. As shown. Fig. 19, the whistle is made of resilient material, and the spring 145 carries a piston 151 for causing an oscillation in pitch.
