Abstract

769,062. Whistles. BACON, J. H. May 26, 1955 [Feb. 8, 1955], No. 15195/55. Classes 13 and 88 (2). [Also in Group XV] The flow of air from the mouthpiece 25, Fig. 3, may be deflected from the sounding edge 28 by the interposition of a movable member, such as the plate 29 which is secured to a piston 21 and contains a series of apertures so that a succession of separate notes of different pitches is produced as the piston 21 is moved up and down. The movable plate 29 may be made to animate a toy bird 42, producing a cuckoo-clock effect. The whistle may be constructed in the shape of a horn, Fig. 7, the pitch of the note to be sounded being indicated by the position of a knob 91 relative to markings on the outside of the instrument. A modified form of the whistle, Fig. 5, produces two notes, one of fixed and the other of variable pitch, by means of two resonating chambers 70 and 71, the associated sounding edges 65 and 66 being mutually offset and placed opposite two corresponding outlets from the mouthpiece 61. The piston 72 carries a plate 74 containing two parallel sets of apertures, one set for each of the two sounding edges.
