Abstract

771,614. Soot blowers. WILSON, P. MC. C. Dec. 2, 1955 [Sept. 14, 1954], No. 26551/54. Class 99(2) A blower head 22, Fig. 1, is advanced and retracted by means of a shaft 20 oscillated from a rotary compressed-air motor 41, e.g. of the rotary vane type, a control valve for which is actuated so that when the shaft has been oscillated a predetermined number of times the motor is stopped. The shaft 20 is in the form of a screw oscillation of which causes reciprocation of a nut 21 acting on the nozzle, the latter being oscillated by en-, gagement of a follower 24 in a cam slot 25 and having ports 26 to admit steam from a supply pipe 28 when the nozzle is in the operative (forward) position. The screw 20 is driven from a shaft 31 connected to a shaft 69, Fig. 4, oscillated by gears 70, 71 from a shaft 59 carrying a bevel gear 58 in mesh, with bevel gears 56, 57 loosely mounted on a shaft 51 driven from a worm 49 on the motor shaft 48, and a worm wheel 50 connected to the shaft by a slip clutch 64, 65. A clutch member 62 slidably keyed to the shaft 51 is moved into engagement with the gears 56, 57 in turn by means of a lever 87 rocked about a pivot 88 by means of a rod moved in opposite directions by engagement of a nut 76 mounted on a screw-threaded part 69a of the shaft 69 with a striker slidable on the rod. The clutch member 62 is pushed into and retained in an operating position by a spring pressed plunger 96 having a V- shaped nose co-operating with a similar nose on the lever 87. The nut 76 carries two pins 99 acting on a star wheel 100 fixed to a shaft 101 which is thus rotated stepby-step. A cam 105, Fig. 11, on the shaft 101 has a single hump 105a acting on the stem 42b of a piston valve 42a to shut off the supply of air from a pipe 43 to a pipe 45 leading to the motor. A second cam 107 attached to the cam 105 acts on a spring- pressed plunger having a wedge-shaped end acting on a drop 107a on the cam at: the end of a revolution to turn the cam 105, into a position in which the valve is released. The cams 105, 107 are angularly adjustable on the shaft 101. The star wheel 100 has three points corresponding to six strokes of the nozzle; the number of strokes may be varied by interposing gearing between the wheel and the cam shaft 101. The motor is started by admitting air at 46 to open the valve 42a, by means of a valve on a remote control panel; an indicator on the panel shows when the blower is in operation. The blower may be one of a series each having its own motor.
