Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0771587/IV(a)/1> wherein R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, R1 is an alkylene or arylene radical, AcO is an acetoxy radical and n is 0 or 1, the compounds being useful for sizing glass fibres. They are prepared by treating the corresponding chlorosilcarbanes with sodium acetate or acetic anhydride. Examples of the radical R include alkyl, alkenyl, cyclo-alkyl, aryl and aralkyl radicals. The examples describe the preparatin of compounds of the formul (1) Meta (AcO)3SiC6H4Si(OAc)3. (2) (AcO)3SiC6H4Si(C6H5)(OAc)2 (3) (AcO)3SiCH2CH2Si(OAc)3. <FORM:0771587/IV(a)/2> The starting material in Example (3), having the formula Cl3SiCH2CH2SiCl3, was prepared from vinyl trichlorosilane and trichlorosilane. In Example (4), (CH3)Cl2SiCH2CH2Si(CH3)Cl2 was prepared from methyldichlorosilane and methylvinyldichlorosilane. In Example (5), (CH3)Cl2Si(CH2)3SiCl2(CH3) was prepared from methyldichlorosilane and allylmethyldichlorosilane In Example (6), (C3H7)Cl2SiCH2CH2Si Cl2(C3H7) was prepared from propyldichlorosilane and vinylpropyldichlorosilane.ALSO:Glass fibres may be sized immediately upon extrusion by using organosilicon compounds of the formula Rn (AcO) 3 - n Si R1 Si Rn (OAc) 3-n wherein R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, R1 is an alkylene or arylene radical, AcO is an acetoxy radical, and n is O or 1 (see Group IVa).
