Abstract

Polymeric products containing free alcohol groups in the form of half esters of glycol residues are obtained by reacting an ethylenic polymer or copolymer containing free carboxyl groups with a cyclic ether containing 3 or 4 atoms in the ring, e.g. ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, trimethylene oxide and 1,2-epoxybutane, at an elevated temperature in a substantially anhydrous medium comprising an inert diluent, such as benzene or toluene, and a basic catalyst under such conditions that polymerization of the cyclic ether does not occur to any substantial extent. Polymers specified containing carboxyl groups are those obtained by the polymerization of acrylic, methacrylic, chloroacrylic, crotonic, tiglic, angelic, cinnamic, sorbic, maleic, fumaric, mesaconic, and citraconic acids, and copolymers thereof with monomers such as butadiene, styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, vinyl acetate, methyl isopropenyl ketone, vinyl isopropyl ether, methyl and cyclohexyl methacrylates and methyl and isobutyl acrylates. Basic catalysts specified are alkali metals and their oxides, hydroxides, hydrides and alkoxides, dimethylaniline, diethylaniline, pyridine, quinoline, ethylpyridine and dimethylpyridine. The polymeric products may be cross-linked by reaction with polybasic acids or di-isocyanates, e.g. 2,4-tolylene di-isocyanate.
