Abstract

771,514. Pipe couplings. OETIKER, H. April 19, 1955 [April 23, 1954], No. 11252/55. Class 99(1) Construction The socket of a pipe coupling has an element 4 which is formed with a rectangular opening leading to a central bore 6 against which an annular oil and petrol proof synthetic rubber sealing ring 13 is pressed by a sleeve 14 and a nut 15, the inner diameter of the ring being slightly smaller than the outer diameter of the nipple; between the nut 15 and the element 4 is a metal seal 18. The valve 19 which is loaded by a spring 22 so that a circular rib 20 on one end thereof abuts the seal 13, has four axially extending portions, 21, each shorter than the thickness of the ring 13. Around the front of the socket is an axially slidable casing 31 urged against a stop ring 12 by a spring 30. In the socket entrance is 'an annular guide 23 with opposed recesses 25 for receiving the transverse projections 38 of the nipple, and two lugs 24 each embodying two helical guide surfaces 26; an interlocking member 27 loaded by the spring 30 against the guide 23 also has two protusions 28 'and two opposed recesses. The nipple may incorporate one projection only in which case the socket would have one or two guide surfaces. Operation. (a) Coupling. The nipple is pressed into the socket whereupon (1) the projections 38 enter the recesses 25 and the nipple is turned in either direction upon contacting the surfaces 26, (2) the front of the nipple contacts the portions 21 and displaces the valve 19, (3) the projections 38 abut the protusions 28 so forcing the member 27 against its spring loading away from the guide 23, and (4) the projections pass through the recesses in the member 27 and the latter is spring returned against the guide 23 so that the recesses are occupied by the top of the lugs 24 thus locking the nipple and socket together. The valve is now open and the nipple can be freely rotated without effecting the valve position. (b) Uncoupling. The nipple is turned until the projections 38 coincide with the top of the lugs 24 and the recesses in member 27, which position may be indicated by marks on the socket and nipple or the nipple only, whereupon the casing is retracted against the action of its spring 30 and passes over the projections 38; the latter abut the top of the lugs 24 and after giving the nipple a 90 degrees rotation, whereby the projections travel down the guide surfaces 26, it can be withdrawn from the socket by which time the valve is closed, by the spring 22.
