Abstract

Transparent models of engineering parts are moulded (see Group V) from cold-curing polyester resin for the purpose of photo-electric stress analysis on loading with or without heating. A suitable resin may be compounded by copolymerizing an unsaturated polyester resin based on a dihydric alcohol and a dicarboxy acid or acids with monomeric styrene using cyclohexanone peroxide as a catalyst and a solution of cobalt naphthenate in styrene as an accelerator. The cyclohexanone peroxide catalyst is dissolved in the monomeric styrene, after which the solution is added to the resin, the whole being stirred until it is homogeneous. Finally, the cobalt naphthenate in styrene accelerator is added and the mixture is allowed to stand until it is free from bubbles. As resins of this nature contract on setting, the mould is of resilient material, or lined with such material, suitable examples of which are gelatine, polyvinyl chloride/plasticiser dispersions, and flexible phenolic resins or resol resins. The gelatine is prepared from a solution containing 60 per cent dilute glycerine and 40 per cent pure gelatine added at a temperature of 80-85 DEG C., allowed to dissolve, and digested at 130 DEG C. to remove water and entrapped air. The mould or mould linings and any necessary cores are cast from the gelatine, preferable casting temperatures being 105 DEG C. for the mould and 90 DEG C. for the cores.
