Class 29 In a refrigerator having low and high temperature compartments 5, 17, cooled respectively by evaporators 9, 21 of a compression system, the compressor motor being controlled by the temperature in the low temperature compartment 5, evaporator 21 congeals a liquid in a casing 26 during operation of the system and the casing 26 cools compartment 17 when the system is inactive, means also being provided to vary the heat transfer rate between the high temperature compartment and the casing 26 and/or to vary the supply of refrigerant to the evaporator 21. The cabinet may be constructed as described in Specification 726,041, with evaporator 21 and casing 26 extending through an aperture 25 in the inner door 16. Evaporators 21, 9 are connected in series in that order. To prevent excessive, cooling of the compartment 17, e.g. if the casing 26 to be cooled below the freezing point of the liquid, vanes 31, Fig. 3, may be closed by a thermal element 33 in the compartment, the shutters preventing an flow between the compartment and the casing 26. Alternatively, Fig. 4, or in addition, a valve 39 may be opened by a thermal element 40 upon excessive cooling of compartment 17 to short circuit the evaporator 21. In modifications evaporators 9, 21 may operate at different pressures or evaporator 21 may be part of a secondary system the condenser of which is cooled by part of evaporator 9.
