Abstract

770,431. Safes. RATNER SAFE CO., Ltd. March 8, 1954 [March 11, 1953], No. 6738/53. Class 44. Auxiliary locking means for the doors of safes, or strong rooms, comprises a spring-urged sliding bolt positioned to engage, or be released for engagement with, the main looking means of the door on the violent disturbance of the door or the main locking means, the sliding bolt also being locked when engaged with the main locking means. In Fig. 2 the auxiliary locking means comprises a housing 10 with a sliding bolt 9 biased by a spring 11 and restrained by tie rod 13 or thrust rod 16. In its fully shot position bolt 9 is locked by a spring-pressed plunger 18 entering a recess 20 in the housing 10. Various arrangements of these bolts are shown in Fig. 4 which shows a safe door with four main locks 40, 41, 42, 43, controlling bolts 44 on the bolt bar 45. The tail 69 of bolt 67 of lock 40 supports the auxiliary bolt 65 by rod 68 and the two bolts normally slide together, bolt 65 being held above its locking position ; but should lock 40 or rod 68 be removed by a violent disturbance bolt 65 is shot into its locking position blocking bolt tail 70. Similarly auxiliary bolt 66 is restrained by tie-rod 71 and lever 72 engaging projections 74 on the lock case 40 and breaking or removal of any of these parts causes bolt 66 to lock bolt tail 75. Should lock 41 be maltreated the supporting bracket 63 may be damaged, thereby releasing rod 62 and auxiliary bolt 61: Similarly lock 42 has bolts 54 and 55 dependent on its look case while lock 43 is closely bridged by a fragile member 48, see Fig. 5, retaining auxiliary bolt 51. Auxiliary bolt 78 is restrained by a tie-rod 83 extending the length of the door and should this be cut the bolt is released to block bolt tail 53. Similarly bolt 77 depends on tie-rods 79 and 81 connected to fulcrum plate 80 so that any attempt to cut bolt tail 82 releases bolt 77 to block bolt tail 47. Auxiliary bolts may also be arranged in opposition with a common tierod between them (see Fig. 3, not shown). Any of the members restraining the auxiliary bolts may be of a fragile or readily frangible material breaking readily under mechanical stress or melting readily on the application of heat.
