770,229. Filters. FILTROX-WERK AKT.- GES. Nov. 24, 1954 [Dec. 1, 1953], No. 34022/54. Class '46. [Also in Groups VI and XVIII] The micro-organism, content of filtered beers, &c., is rapidly determined by diverting a measured quantity of the filtrate through an organism-proof membrane filter disc, removing the organisms retained on the disc and counting them microscopically. As shown, a portion of filtrate flowing in the pipe 1 is diverted through cock 3a and pipe 2 to the membrane 12 housed within screwed parts 6, 7 which keep the disc taut. The organism-free liquid is removed through the perforated flow 11, pipe 10 and T-piece 19. After sufficient liquid has been passed, cock 3a is closed and cock 3b opened, thus causing filtrate to flow through the pipe 18 to the nozzle 17 ; a partial vacuum is produced in pipes 2, 10 due to the ejector effect. On opening the air breathing screw 16, the residual liquid is removed. Cock 3b is then closed, the screw connections 5b, 5d loosened and the whole apparatus 5b-10 lifted off. In an alternative procedure the apparatus 5b-10 is disconnected and the residual liquid removed by vacuum. The filter disc 12 is then escaped by unscrewing parts 6, 7, the sediment is scraped from the disc onto a microscope slide and the cells counted. The cocks 3a, 3b may be replaced by a single three-way cock ; a flow-meter may be incorporated in the pipe 2.
