In an engine with ventilation of the crankcase 1, Fig. 1, via a separate smoothing chamber 18, Fig. 2, the latter is contained in a cover 13, Fig. 1, housing two gears 9 and 11, Fig. 2, located between the flywheel 7, Fig. 1, and the crankcase 1, the driving gear 9 being mounted on the crank-shaft. The cover 13 which is screwed to the crankcase 1 has two sections, one of which, together with a lid 14, encloses the flywheel 7 whilst the other section behind the flywheel compartment accommodates the gears 9 and 11, Fig. 2, which are interconnected by an idler 10, the gear 11 driving an auxiliary, not shown, such as a fuel-injection pump; the idler 10 which may act as a counterbalancing wheel, is mounted on a counterbalancing shaft passing through the crankcase. A plate 15, Fig. 1, is positioned between the crankcase 1 and cover 13 whilst a partition 18, Fig. 2, substantially separates the gear space 17 from the smoothing chamber 18 the latter opening at the bottom into the crankcase and at the top to atmosphere via a vent 20; the upper and wider part of the chamber 18 incorporates baffles 22 and 23 to lengthen the path to the vent and to prevent oil passing to the latter. The vent 20 may incorporate an oil filter tube 26 and a cap 28, ventilation being effected through a tube 29 when the cap is in position. The partition 18 and baffles 22 and 23 all register with the plate 15 and are machined jointly with the plate. The plate may be dispensed with.
