Abstract
769,511. Hand turning gear; cooling; crankcases. SUNBEAM CORPORATION. April 18, 1955 [Aug. 12, 1954], No. 11150/55. Classes 7 (2) and 7 (5). In a manually-operated starting-mechanism for an engine having a crankcase 11, Fig. 1, and a crank-shaft 15a extending outside the latter, including an annular projection 18a on the crankcase 11 surrounding and concentric with the crank-shaft, a flywheel 20 secured to the crank-shaft extension, a reel 43 rotatably mounted on the projection 18a between the crank case 11 and the flywheel, a pawl 60, Fig. 3, being pivoted on the flywheel and cooperating with a ratchet 46 secured to the reel 43, a cable 37 is partially wound upon the reel to enable the latter to be rotated and through the pawl 60 and ratchet 46 to rotate the flywheel and hence the crank-shaft. The crank-shaft 15a, Fig. 1, supports a flywheel 20 embodying a magneto, a cooling fan 21, the starting mechanism 22, and a power take-off pulley 23, the fan and flywheel magneto being enclosed in a shroud 25; the fan 21 which draws air into the shroud 25 through an opening 26 forces it over fins 28 on the cylinder and head, the opening 26 being covered by a perforated screen 29 secured to the pulley 23 for rotation therewith. The shroud 25 or a part secured thereto extends over the cylinder head and is fastened to the housing 11; openings are provided in the shroud for a sparking plug and a bush through which passes the starting cable 37. The orankshaft 15a is journalled in bearings 16 and 17 the latter being disposed in a cover 18 closing one end of the housing 11. The starting mechanism, which is arranged between the cover 18 and the flywheel magneto 20, includes a spiral rewind spring 40 within a recess 41 defined by a number of projections 18a on the cover 18 and the reel 43, the latter comprising a plate 44 having a hub 44a journalled upon an extension 18b of the cover 18. The ratchet plate 46 attached to the plate 44 forms with the latter a groove in which the cable 37 is wound, the inner end of which is provided with a spherical member that seats in a co-operating recess in the plate 44 and is thereby secured thereto ; the outer cable end is fixed to a " T " shaped rubber handle. The ratchet 46 is provided with a number of lateral teeth 46a, Fig. 3, arranged in a circle and the spring 40 is connected between the cover 18 and the reel 43. One end 60b of the pawl 60 coacts with the teeth 46a whilst the other end 60a is normally biased by a spring 62 into engagement with the crank-shaft 15a thereby limiting the counter-clockwise rotation thereof. The locations of the teeth and ratchet may be interchanged. When the engine starts the pawl 60 is centrifugally rotated into abutment with a stop so that its ends move out of engagement with both the crank-shaft 15a and teeth 46a thereby disconnecting the starter from the engine. Specification 753,209 [Group XXXV] is referred to.
