769,433. Supply systems for A.C. welding arcs. FOSTER TRANSFORMERS, Ltd., and JENNINGS, R. E. Nov. 15, 1954 [Nov. 17, 1953], No. 31846/53. Class 38 (4). To avoid high voltage at the welding electrode E during non-welding periods, the voltage of an auxiliary transformer 3, acting in opposition to the main welding transformer 1, with which it is connected in a closed series loop by a relay energizing circuit 4, 5, balances the voltage of the main transformer 1 and caused re-energization of the relay which, at its contacts 7, disconnects the electrode from the main transformer and connects it to a low voltage tapping on the auxiliary transformer, over contacts 8. A condenser 6 delays the release of the relay. When the electrode E touches the work to recommence welding the voltage balance of the two transformers is disturbed so that the relay again becomes energized and restores normal welding connections. The transformer 3 either has high magnetic leakage or is fed through a series resistor. The relay may be of a type intended for A.C. operation, the rectifier bridge 4 then being unnecessary.
