Abstract

An antibiotic composition particularly for veterinary use comprises 10-100 mg. per mil of tetracycline, oxytetracycline or chlorotetracycline in a mineral oil containing a non-toxic polyvalent metallic salt of a fatty acid. It is preferred to use 0.5 to 5 per cent (based on the composition) of the metallic salt. The gas produced by heating the mineral oil with the metallic salt and then cooling, is mixed cold with the antibiotic, which may be the free base or any therapeutically active form such as the hydrochloride. The addition of 1/10th volume of water, based on the mineral oil content, increases the initial absorption of the antibiotic on injection. Specified metallic salts and aluminium stearate, calcium stearate, magnesium stearate, calcium oleate, aluminium oleate and calcium myristate. Specification 714,085 is referred to.
