Abstract
To reduce the radio-activity of radio-active liquids there are used ion-exchangers in which heavy-metal ions having an atomic weight in excess of 100 are associated with or substituted for the usual ions. Examples of such heavy-metal ions are those of barium, silver, lead, cadmium, bismuth and mercury. In the first alternative the association of ions (the "usual" ions being, for example, those of alkali metals) may be in a single exchanger or in two exchangers in series, the first containing the heavy-metal ions and the second the "usual" ions. The liquid may be passed through a filtering candle or a diaphragm comprising the ion-exchangers either bodily in permanent form or on its surface in the form of an easily-renewed bed. Alternatively it may be agitated with powdered exchanger and decanted therefrom or passed through a layer of granulated exchanger(s).
