Abstract
Caesium is removed from solution by passage through a column loaded with mixed ferrocyanide of the formula [Fe(CN)6)xMyAz, wherein M is an element of atomic number 21-29, e.g. Cu or Ni and A is an alkali metal (i.e. Li, Na, K or Rb), adsorbed on a carrier. The carrier may be an anionic resin which is impregnated by saturating with ferrocyanide ion by contacting with a saturated solution of alkali metal ferrocyanide and then incorporating the transition element by contacting the resin with a saturated solution of a salt of a transition element. The mixed ferrocyanide may also be incorporated in a glass fibre cake by, for example, filtering a suspension of the glass fibre and mixed ferrocyanide or impregnating a preformed cake of glass fibre with the precipitated mixed ferrocyanide. As illustrated in the examples, caesium-137 is removed from aqueous solutions which may also contain other salts, such as sodium nitrate, in solution.ALSO:Caesium 137 is removed from solutions by passage through a column loaded with mixed ferrocyanide of the formula [Fe(CN)6]x My Az, wherein M is (an element of atomic number 21-29) and A is an alkali metal (i.e. Li, Na, K or Rb) adsorbed on a carrier. The carrier may be an anionic exchange resin which is impregnated by saturating with ferrocyanide ion by contacting with a saturated solution of alkali metal ferrocyanide and then incorporating the transition element by contacting the resin with a saturated solution of a salt of a transition element.
