Abstract
768,938. Glass manufacture. EMHART MANUFACTURING CO. May 23, 1955. [June 8, 1954], No. 14859/55. Class 56 The spout section of a glass-feeder forehearth includes a pair of refractory blocks, which incorporate burner ports and glasscovering parts, resting when operative on the retaining-wall at the sides and front of the glass outlet, and swingable into inoperative positions to permit removal and repair of the blocks, or renewal, clearing or observation of the spout. The retaining wall 10 of the spout 13 is insulated at 12 and supports refractory blocks 21, 22 which are pivoted at 35 and 66. The blocks are arcuately formed at 21a, 22a to define, when in their operative positions, with the arcuate-surface 15 of a refractory back cover block 14, a circular opening above the spout 13 for the means-controlling the glass flow. The blocks 21, 22 are oppositely handed, but otherwise similar, being mounted on a carrier 26. having a vertical wall 28 with side extensions 28a engaging the sides of the block, and a supporting ledge 29 which is received in a recess in the bottom of the block leaving a refractory: surface 31 which rests upon the retaining wall 10. The cover part 22 of the block overhangs the burner part 24, and the top of the block is recessed at 116 to receive insulating material 117. The top securing-plate 33 is bolted at 34 to the carrier 26, and fuel-gas manifold 48, having ports 48a corresponding with the burner ports 56, 57 &c. is clamped on a ledge 49 of the carrier by bars 60, 61 which bear on elbows 58 which connect the manifold with the burner ports. Straight burner nozzles 59 fit into the elbows 58 and into sleeves 64 which bear against asbestos rings 65 to seal against the burner ports. The pivot 35 of the block 21 is a conical end of a screwed rod which seats in a fulcrum block, the block 21 being vertically adjustable by the handwheel 40 on the screwed rod. The weight of the block 21, when swung into the inoperative position, is taken by a plate 118. The block 22 may be similarly pivoted and supported, but, as shown, it is pivoted on a vertical post 66, the hinge lug 72 on the carrier 26 resting on an annular step bearing 70 carried by a bracket 67 which is adjustably bolted to a stationary member. The block assemblies 21, 22 may be hoisted vertically away for repair or replacement, screw eyes 75, 76 being provided for this purpose.
