[Also in Group XXXV] In a pump and motor combination of the kind in which the pump and motor are mounted on a common shaft and are enclosed in what is essentially a common housing throughout which the liquid being pumped has free access, the sole way of liquid communication from the pump to the motor is by way of a flame-proof gap between a surface which rotates with the shaft and a surface which is stationary with the common casing. The pump unit, which is suitable for pumping inflammable liquids such as petroleum products, comprises a centrifugal pump impeller 1 and a driving motor 2, on a common shaft 3. Jourmal bearings 5, 6 and thrust bearings 8, 10 are of the tilting-pad type and may be in accordance with Specification 701,508, [Group XXXIV]. The motor 2 is immersed in the liquid being pumped, the sole way of liquid communication between the pump and motor being through a flame-proof clearance 15 between a sleeve 13 fast on the shaft 3 and a stationary sleeve 14. Both sleeves are of non-sparking material. The clearance 15 can be measured by means of a feeler gauge inserted, after removal of screw plugs 21, through each of three tangential holes 20. For this purpose, gaps 16 and 19 are provided in the sleeve 14 and a surrounding sleeve 17, respectively. A disc 7 carried by the shaft 3 for co-operation with the two thrust bearings 8, 10, has radial holes 24 which reach into the shaft to join an axial bore 23. The disc 7 thus forms an auxiliary impeller which circulates liquid from the casing 4 through an external cooler 22. The pressure at the inlet 28 to the auxiliary impeller is maintained the same as the pump delivery pressure by means of a communicating pipe 34 which is connected to a bore 33 leading to an annular recess 32 in the inner periphery of sleeve 14. Cooling water is passed through an annular cavity 35. Gas venting means may be provided as described in Specification 544,930.
