Abstract
In isomerizing alkylated benzenes having 8-18 carbon atoms in the molecule, at least one such alkylated benzene is contacted in the presence of excess hydrogen, under hydrogenating conditions, with a catalyst comprising an active acidic carrier component and a hydrogenating component, and the products from this treatment are contacted in the presence of excess hydrogen, under dehydrogenating conditions, with such a catalyst. The active acidic carrier component consists of silica and at least one of the metal oxides alumina, magnesia, thoria and zirconia; the hydrogenating component is nickel, cobalt, platinum or palladium. The hydrogenating component may form 0.05-20 per cent of the catalyst. The hydrogenating conditions of the first stage are at temperatures in the range 300-950 DEG F. and pressures of 50-1000 lb./sq. in.; the dehydrogenating conditions of the second stage are at temperatures in the range 700-1000 DEG F. and pressures 50-1000 lb./sq. in. A mixture of 8-carbon atom alkylbenzenes in which ethylbenzene is the predominating isomer is converted by the method to a mixture of ortho-, meta- and para-xylenes with a smaller amount of ethylbenzene.
