Abstract

768,569. Endless belt conveyers. NAYLOR BROS., Ltd., and NAYLOR, W. May 18,1955 [May 20, 1954], No. 14787/54. Class 78 (1). In a belt conveyer having a belt or other transversely flexible load-carrying surface 1 supported adjacent each edge by one or more jaws 7, 7a engaging cables or cable runs 3, 3a, the or each jaw is so constructed in relation to the width of the belt between the respective jaws adjacent opposite edges of the belt that when the belt is troughed to a predetermined degree the distance between the respective cables or cable runs at opposite sides of the belt remains substantially the same as when the belt is in flat condition. The jaws 7, 7a have lateral gripping faces at about thirty degrees to each other to grip the cables and areconstructed such that the distances between the centres of the cables 3, 3a and the medial plane of the belt are related to the distances between the respective jaws and the centre of the belt, so that both pairs of cable runs 3 and 3a are maintained at substantially uniform spacing irrespective of the troughed condition of the belt. Jaws 7, 7a are formed in a block 6. A second block 9 has a jaw 10 formed in it to grip a cable on the return run, the two blocks being secured together with a springy cross strap S to the belt by bolts 8a. Cross strap 5 may be of non- uniform width, being tapered towards its ends. A groove 14 in the block 6 provides clearance for the rims of cable pulleys when the belt is troughed. In a second construction, Fig. 5, jaws 13, 13a are moulded in the belt, which is reinforced by a metal strip 12 moulded to follow the contours of the jaws. According to the Provisional Specification, the jaws may be formed by such a moulded strip secured externally to the belt.
