Abstract

768,407. Cleaning printing surfaces. ADDRESSOGRAPH - MULTIGRAPH CORPORATION. April 1, 1955 [Sept. 28, 1954], No. 9598/55. Class 100(2) A device for cleaning a rotary printing surface comprises a frame, a roller rotatably mounted in the frame and capable of being moved bodily to and from frictional contact with the surface to be cleaned, means for applying a cleaning fluid or solvent to the roller and means for cleaning the ink laden solvent from the roller. As shown a planographic printing machine 10 comprises frame members 11 and an offset cylinder 16 having a rubber blanket 17 which is to be cleaned by the cleaning device 20. The device 20 includes a main frame 21 having a pair of end plates 22 spaced apart by members 23, 24 and attached to the frame members 11. Pivotally mounted between the plates 22 on a shaft 35 is a supplemental frame 30 including a pair of end plates 32 spaced apart by a member 33. A cleaning roll 40 is rotatably mounted on a shaft 41 which is secured to frame plates 32. A lever 43 pivotally mounted on an eccentric stud 44 on the member 23 is provided with a slot 45 coacting with a pin 46 on the member 33 so that by swinging the lever 43 the roll 40 may be moved into and out of contact with the offset blanket 17. The pressure of the roll 40 on the blanket 17 is adjusted by means of the eccentric stud 44. The supplemental frame 30 is normally tensioned towards its idle position by springs 51 connected between the end plates 22 and 32. The roll is driven by friction against the blanket 17 and is reciprocated axially of the shaft 41 by means of a cam groove formed in one end of the roll and engaged by a pin carried by a block secured to the right hand frame plate 32. A supply of cleaning fluid 12 is stored in a pan 60 which rests on the member 24 and comprises a substantially enclosed pan having a slot 61 into which a roller 62 projects for transferring the fluid to the roll 40. The roll 62 is mounted between brackets 63 pivotally connected on a cross-bar 64, the ends of which are rotatably mounted in the frame plates 32. The roller 62 is maintained in contact with the roll 40 by a counterweight 66 in the form of a cross-rod. The ink transferred to the roll 40 is removed by a wiper blade 70 secured to the bar 64 so as to press tangentially against the roll 40. For adjusting the pressure of the wiper 70 a plate 74 is secured to the bar 64 and a threaded stud 71 is adapted to bear on the plate 74. The stud 71 is adjustably carried by a lever 72 pivotally secured at 73 to the member 33. The container 60 may be removed by releasing a spring catch 81 pivotally connected to the member 24 and pulling the container 60 off the member 24, an inturned lip on the container engaging the roller 62 and rocking the latter out of the container. When the container is to be replaced the operator raises the roller 62 out of its path by means of the counterweight 66.
