Abstract
768,316. Gas-liquid contact towers. DOW CHEMICAL CO. April 13, 1955 [June 4, 1954], No. 10682/55. Class 55 (2). A tower-packing body comprises three or more intersecting plate-like parts, the outer edges of which lie on or near a circumscribing sphere. One or more of the parts may be apertured to prevent the pocketing of liquid. In Fig. 1, three intersecting parts are in form of flat discs 10, 11, 12, the disc 12 being holed at 17 to avoid the said pocketing. In Fig. 2, the part 18 is in the form of a disc distorted into a saddle shape, fins 19 being formed, at right angles to one another, one on each side of the part 18 which may be perforated, as shown, or unperforated. The fins 19 may have parallel edges for a part of their lengths, the body then departing somewhat from true spherical outline. Nesting of the bodies may be reduced by fingers which extend from the ends of each fin 19 to the apex of the other. In Fig. 5, each side of the part 18 is provided with two crossed fins 20, 24 and is holed for drainage. The fins need not be plane-faced and may be corrugated at 26, Fig. 8, and deeply notched at 27. The fins may be replaced by a plurality of pins or partial fins. More than two fins may intersect on each side of the part 18. The bodies may be of metals, ceramics, glass, wood, organic resins or plastics and may be of a size proportional to the diameter of the tower, e.g. up to 2 inches for a tower of under 1 foot in diameter, and up to 6 inches for a tower diameter of over 3 feet.
