Abstract
768,247. Turbine and compressor blades. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. March 1, 1955 [March 12, 1954], No. 7262/54. Class 110 (3). A blade for a turbine or compressor comprises a core 1 which for part 1b of its length towards its root end is tapered in the direction of the blade tip, a sheath 2 fitting closely around the core and having a flared portion 2a towards its root end fitting around the tapered part 1b of the core. A retaining block 3 having a tapered hole in which the flared portion of the sheath fits is provided, the flared portion of the sheath being clamped between the core and the retaining block. Longitudinal grooves 8 are formed in the surfaces of the core which with the sheath 2 form passages for coolant fluid. The leading and trailing edge portions of the core are cut away so that cooling fluid passages 9, 10 are formed at the leading and trailing edges of the blade. Ducts 11, 12 are formed in the blade root which communicate with the passages 8, 9, 10. Serrations 7 are formed in the sides of the retaining block 3 and the root end of the core 1 by which the blade may be retained for example between a pair of correspondinglyserrated rotor discs. A transverse flanged portion 2b formed at the root end of the sheath 2 is also clamped between the block 3 and the core 1. The parts of the blade may be secured together by a metal fusion process. In a second embodiment the grooves 8 extend below the root end of the sheath and the ducts 11, 12 are not provided. The invention is also applicable when heating fluid has to be supplied to a blade for example to prevent formation of ice on compressor blades. Specification 697,908, [Group XXVIII], is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 694,241.
