768,162. Hydraulic brakes. TEVES, H., and TEVES, E. A., [trading as TEVES MASCHINEN-UND ARMATURENFABRIK KOMM.-GES., A.]. Oct. 7, 1954 [Oct. 14, 1953], No. 28944/54. Class 103 (1). In a single-stage master cylinder for hydraulic braking systems having a compensating passage connecting the pressure system and a reservoir in which the connection is controlled by the piston seal, the conventional second passage connecting the annular space behind the piston head to the reservoir is omitted in order to shorten the length of the piston such that when the piston returns from the braking position to the brake release position the pressure space in the master cylinder is filled via the single compensating passage, annular space and passages through the piston head. Fig. 2 illustrates an embodiment wherein the piston crown 10 is provided with an annular recess 11 into which packing ring 12 can be pressed when there is an excess of pressure in the system, as shown in Fig. 3. In the inoperative position of the master cylinder 1, illustrated in Fig. 2, the wall 13 of the packing ring covers the compensating passage 6 and when the piston is in the braking position the passage 6 is directly connected to annular space 4 and should vacuum occur in the braking system upon rapid return of piston, brake fluid can pass from reservoir 7 via passage 6, the annular space 4 and packing ring 12 to prevent vacuum being formed in annular chamber 4. Axial passages 9 are provided in piston crown 10 to facilitate passage of fluid.
