Abstract

An emulsion for use as a motor fuel comprises a hydrocarbon fuel boiling within the range 100 DEG F. to 572 DEG F., water, and an emulsifying agent which is (a) a condensation product of 1 to 10 mols of ethylene oxide with a mixture of branched chain, primary, monohydric alcohols having the configuration of alcohols produced by the "oxo" process from a polyisobutylene and/or a polypropylene or (b) an alkali metal, ammonium or amine salt of the sulphated condensation product (a) or (c) an alkali metal, ammonium or amine salt of dihexyl 4-sulpho-phthalate or a mixture of two or more of these emulsifying agents. The emulsion may be one in which the hydrocarbons constitute the continuous phase, and may contain 5 to 6 per cent by weight of hydrocarbons, 22 to 94.8 per cent of water and 0.1 to 6 per cent of emulsifying agent. The hydrocarbon may be paraffinic or naphthenic. The emulsifying agents (a) above are those obtained by reacting tri-isobutylene and/or tetrapropylene with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the "oxo" process to produce highly branched tridecanols, which are reacted with ethylene oxide. The emulsifying agents (b) above are those where the condensates (a) are sulphated, and then salts obtained. In the case of agents (b) and (c) sodium and potassium are the preferred alkali metals, and amines having alkyl or alkanol groups each containing not more than four carbon atoms are the preferred amine salts. In examples emulsions are prepared from a hydrocarbon fuel, water, and one or more of the butylamine salt of dihexyl 4-sulphophthalate, the condensation products of tridecanol (derived by the "oxo" process), and 1 and 5 mols of ethylene oxide, and the sodium salts of the sulphated condensation products. A list of suitable emulsifying agents is given.
