Class 39(2) [Also in Group XXIX] A turret machine for electric discharge lamps 1 comprises a number of head assemblies 20, only one being shown, on a spider 22 keyed to a driven shaft 24 mounted horizontally on a table 28 which is part of a base 30; a valve 34 (see also Group XXIX) is disposed on the shaft and consists of a movable plate 42 connected by tubes 38 to a head block 44, and a fixed plate 46 connected by tubes 47 to one or more vacuum pumps and if desired to a source of flushing and or filling gas not shown. Ports in the valve plates provide for continuous communication between each assembly and the source of vacuum or pressure gas without ever permitting intercommunication between any two assemblies. A frame 58 on the base 30 has a pair of arms 70 and 76 which, respectively, support two slip rings 72 engaged by fingers 74 and 75 on the various assemblies 20, and two cam tracks 78 and 80. Each assembly 20 is provided with a base 82 secured to the spider 22 whilst a rod 86 journalled in the base 82 supports a burner plate 88 and a cam follower 94 which rides on the track 80; a spring-loaded sleeve 106 also journalled in the base 82 incorporates an arm 108 on which is a cam follower 110 co-operating with track 78. Levers 182 and 188 are mounted on each block 44 and each plate 88 carries a burner 144 and a lamp supporting cradle 166; the lamp tubulation 7 which projects through the burner 144 and plate 88, enters the block 44 and is hermetically sealed therein by levers 182 and 188.
