Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the formula R1OOC-CHR-N(CH2CH2Cl)2 and their acid addition salts, wherein R is hydrogen or a C1 to C4 alkyl group and R1 is a C1 to C4 alkyl group. Such compounds are obtained by condensing an alcohol of formula R1OH with a compound having the general formula Y-CHR-N(CH2CH2Cl)2 where Y is a carboxyl radical or a derivative thereof capable of forming a carboxylic acid ester group with an intermediate or concurrent hydrolysis reaction when Y is a derivative of a carboxyl group. The derivative may be a carboxylic acid amide, nitrile or carboxylic acid halide. The amides and acids may be obtained by the methods of Specifications 767,679 and 767,680. In Examples (1), (2) and (4) N-bis-(b -chloroethyl)-glycine ethyl ester hydrochloride is prepared by heating N - bis - (b - chloroethyl) - glycinenitrile, N - bis - (b - chloroethyl) - glycine hydrochloride, and N - bis - (b - chloroethyl)-glycineamide hydrochloride respectively, with alcoholic hydrochloric acid; (3) N-bis-(b -chloroethyl)-alanine ethyl ester is prepared by heating N - bis - (b - chloroethyl) - alanineamide with alcoholic hydrochloric acid. An amide or nitrile may also be first hydrolysed to the acid, which, with or without isolation, is converted to the ester.
