Abstract
3-Methyl-1-pentyn-3-ol is reacted with phthalic anhydride in the presence of pyridine. The cooled reaction mixture is diluted with water, acidified with hydrochloric acid and allowed to crystallize to give 3-methyl-1-pentyn-3-yl acid phthalate <FORM:0767777/IV(b)/1> This compound may be reacted with sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate, calcium carbonate, ammonia, monoethanolamine, diethanolamine and ethylene diamine to give the respective salts. The acid phthalate and/or its salts may be used as anthelminthics in medicine (see Group VI).ALSO:Compositions for combating Trichuris infection of mammals comprise 3 - methyl-1 - pentyn - 3 - yl phthalate <FORM:0767777/VI/1> and/or non toxic salts thereof. A non-toxic pharmaceutical carrier which may be water, glycerol, non-toxic glycols, alcohol or mixtures thereof: or talc, lactose, corn starch, stearic acid, magnesium stearate, methyl cellulose and vegetable gums may also be present. The preparation may be in the form of a solution, suspension, tincture, elixir or emulsion or tablet, capsule, powder, soft pill or coated granule. In an example 3 - methyl - 1 - pentyn - 3 - yl acid phthalate is granulated with starch and acacia, the granules mixed with starch, talc and magnesium stearate and the mixture tabletted.
