Abstract

<PICT:0767661/III/1> A liquid-dispensing apparatus, suitable for use in serological testing, comprises a plurality of suction mouths each sealable to the open end of a receptacle, a hydraulic channel including a piston and cylinder in communication with each suction mouth, and means for moving the several pistons simultaneously by predetermined distances. As shown, a series of pipes 51 lead to annuli 50 with which are associated rubber rings 49 in a plate 39. Pipettes 22 may be inserted in the rubber rings and are sealed to the tubes 51 by raising plate 39 by means of handle 47 in order to cause the rings to expand inwardly by forcing them against the annuli. Suction is applied to the pipes 51 by a hydraulic system comprising oil reservoirs 52, cylinders 54, and pistons 55; the pistons are moved simultaneously by means of rack 57, pinion 58, and a handle attached to shaft 59; pinion 58 is geared to a drum 63 which carries a scale calibrated in volumes. A vertically movable lift 35 carries racks for pipettes or test tubes, or for a trough containing liquid to be sucked up. To discharge liquid from the pipettes, the handle controlling the rack 57 is moved in the opposite direction and may be adapted to overshoot the zero position in order to blow off liquid from the ends of the pipettes. The use of the apparatus for carrying out a series of agglutination tests is described.
